Grow more value.
Use less.

Arable exists to make food production more local, resource-efficient and resilient. That means changing how food is grown, but also creating practical opportunities for people to learn, work and participate in the food system.

90–95%less water used by our vertical growing approach
≈90%less land required for production
Pesticide-freecontrolled-environment growing
≈90%local sourcing across our farm systems
What impact means to us

Better farming is only useful if it solves real problems.

Vertical farming is not automatically sustainable simply because crops are stacked indoors. The real question is whether the whole system uses resources intelligently, serves a real market, creates useful work and strengthens the food system around it.

01 · Planet

Use resources more carefully

Reduce water and land intensity, avoid pesticides and design equipment around practical, maintainable systems.

02 · Food

Grow closer to demand

Produce fresh food near the people and businesses that use it, with year-round controlled production.

03 · People

Create skills, not just hardware

Every farm needs growers, operators and problem-solvers. We want the technology to create capability around it.

04 · Community

Make growing visible again

Schools, communities and future growers should be able to see, understand and participate in modern food production.

Resource efficiency

Less input. More productive space.

Controlled-environment farming gives us the ability to recirculate water, intensify production per square metre and remove the need for routine pesticide use.

90–95%

Less water

Hydroponic recirculation allows water to be reused through the growing system.

≈90%

Less land

Vertical stacking increases productive growing area inside a compact footprint.

Pesticide applications

Our controlled growing environment is designed around pesticide-free crop production.

These figures describe Arable’s controlled-environment vertical farming approach and should be interpreted against comparable conventional production. Exact resource use varies by crop, farm configuration and operating conditions.

Food system resilience

Fresh food should not need to travel further than it has to.

Arable grows in the Western Cape for Western Cape customers. Growing closer to demand shortens the chain between production and consumption and makes it possible to plan supply around actual local customers.

Closer to customersLocal production reduces unnecessary distance between grower and buyer.
Year-round growingControlled environments reduce dependence on normal field seasons.
Planned productionStanding orders can be reflected directly in growing schedules.
Fresh, usable cropsQuality is about flavour, shelf life and practical value.
People & capability

Technology should leave people more capable than it found them.

Arable is youth-led, but the bigger goal is to create an ecosystem in which more people can understand, operate and eventually build modern food-production systems.

Employment

Real operating roles around real farms.

Crop work, harvesting, packing, logistics, food safety, maintenance and farm operations all create practical work around the technology.

Skills

Learn by doing.

Our operating model combines horticulture, engineering, data, compliance and food production.

Future growers

Make agriculture feel accessible again.

Modern farming can connect food production with technology, science, operations and entrepreneurship.

Impact in practice

Small projects can change how people see food.

Not every impact project needs to be a giant infrastructure programme. Sometimes the starting point is helping a learner, teacher or community see food production differently.

Education · Western Cape

Beaumont Primary Eco-School

Arable has supported the Beaumont Primary Eco-School initiative, helping bring modern growing and food-system thinking closer to learners.

Global education

Raising Global Citizens

Our work with Raising Global Citizens in the Netherlands connects food, sustainability and learning across borders.

Knowledge sharing

Talks, demonstrations & farm exposure

From schools to universities and community groups, Arable uses real crops and working systems to help people understand future food production.

What we are building toward

Impact scales when the next farm creates more than produce.

Future Arable farms are intended to be productive food infrastructure first, but they can also become places for skills development, local employment and community participation.

Our planned Cape Town expansion, including the Kamp Street Market opportunity, is being approached with that wider role in mind. This is future-facing work, not impact we are claiming as already delivered.

Local jobsMore production capacity creates additional operating and logistics roles.
Practical trainingUse the farm as a place to build horticulture, operations and technical capability.
Community accessMake modern food production more visible and understandable.
Commercial sustainabilityImpact works best when the farm itself has a viable path to long-term operation.
Global context

Where our work aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals.

The UN SDGs are useful as a framework, but we prefer to connect them to specific things Arable actually does rather than display the icons on their own.

02

Zero Hunger

More resilient local food production and year-round controlled growing.

08

Decent Work

Productive farms create technical, operational and food-production roles.

11

Sustainable Cities

Food production can be brought closer to dense urban markets.

12

Responsible Production

Resource-efficient growing, local sourcing and planned production.

13

Climate Action

More efficient resource use and shorter food supply chains can support resilience.

The original question still matters

Why start later?

Food systems, water pressure, urban growth and skills development are not future problems. They are current ones. Arable’s role is to keep building practical solutions now, learn from operating them, and make the next farm better than the last.
